Managed to land a keeper size blue finally. Not a giant, but respectable and headed for the Holland next week. Still picking up a few small ones along the way. Also started catching small whiting at low tide which I’ll use for bait at high tide so one way or the other I’m keeping busy and wet. At this point I’m fishing around the weather which is on and off stormy. The surf is getting bigger but so far I have the tackle on hand to deal with it. We’ll be getting out of here just as the weather breaks toward the cold side. The irony in that is that we were originally scheduled to be here next week but the landlords asked us if we could move ahead a week to help them out with a remodeling project. Sure glad we did and enjoyed mostly nice warm weather. In the past our November stays have been closer to Thanksgiving, mainly because in my experience the bigger blues are in the surf toward the end of the month. But we also hit the time change so it got dark too early for us. All things considered, I think this time slot will work out better for us and when the big blues hit the surf, I’ll just drive over a day fishing as weather permits.
Ran into an interesting guy on the beach yesterday. He and his wife were catching small whiting at a fast clip – actually his wife was catching the whiting and he was talking to me. He said his wife dried the whiting and sold them on the internet. This guy was a really chatty Kathy and rattled on that they sold the dried fish all over the world and last year made $11K, enough for a two month visit to the Philippines. It was fun watching her since she fished like a machine. Very light tackle, very short casts but lots of fish. She had a carpenter’s apron and simply unhooked the fish and popped them into the apron. She went from landing a fish to casting again in a few seconds. Very impressive.
A few weeks back we ordered a calamari appetizer at BJ’s brew pub in Daytona and was pleasantly surprised how good it was. It had been six months since we had the calamari at Flagler Fish Company and we’d forgotten what good calamari was all about. So much for BJ’s. Also visited our second favorite restaurant, JT’s. Neither of these places are fancy but they sure know how to put together seafood.
The elections went fairly well as I had expected. My big disappointment was that Dirty Harry didn’t go down in flames. I guess the silver lining to that is that had Harry lost, Chuck Shumer would have been the Senate leader. That would have been on a par with Nancy Pelosi as Speaker. Shrek crashed which restored my faith in central Florida; California and NY stayed seriously lefty which I expected; and the south returned to solid Republican where it should be; ditto the midwest. I was especially interested in the Utah Senate race where Sam Granato was running. In my opinion, Granato’s made the only really edible sandwich in Utah and my concern was that he would get too involved with politics and let the sandwich quality fall off. So Sam’s loss was Utah’s gain.
